Repetitions

This week you can expect an update with support for variations containing repetitions.  An example would be (don’t try before the forthcoming v1.2 update!):

  1. e4 Nf6
  2. Nf3 Ng8
  3. Ng1

putting us back to after 1. e4.  Normally this isn’t part of someone’s planned opening — that would be weird from both players — but it can certainly happen if you’re just tapping around the board.

If you have any trouble, be sure to export your database and email the PGN file or post here so I have a sample of what’s wrong.  Onward!

  1. I suppose this would work for what chess players call transpositions?

Question on last update: everything works except that it crashes (closes the program) whenever I go to the “Results” tab. I’m using a 4Gs. Could the fact that it is optimized for 5 be the culprit, or do you have similar feedback from other users?

  2. Thanks for the report. I test on an iPhone 4 and 4S, and my testers are on a 4S and 5S. We didn’t see any crashes during ordinary use; I have 109 positions (plus thousands added/deleted while testing) while they have fewer.

Still, I missed this crash. There’s a review mentioning it on iTunes (your review?) that prompted me to look deeper and find the transposition crashes. Apple should approve the fixes any day now; it was submitted last Monday.

I’d love to hear if that helps you. Also, if you want to mail me your PGN it will save lots of guesswork about what went wrong. bsalomon (at) gmail.com.

  3. Hi,

I have one note on this app. It would be better in practice don’t stop in one move. for example: If I play with white pieces 1. d4 blacks answer may be …1. Nf6 or d5 or c6 and i play 2. c4. this app stops in my right move and practice begins again with new line. I think It would be better if the app continues randomly choosing opponents moves.

    • Hi Gio,

Good idea! If you have the latest update (version 1.3, September 27) it should be doing this. Here is an example:

      1. d4 (marked as key move)
      1.. Nf6
      2. c4 (marked as key move)

Now when you go to Training, sometimes you get move 2 first because it’s picking any positions you haven’t tested. If it picks move 2 first, then it stops after 2. c4.

But if it picks 1. d4 and you answer correctly, the next problem will be 2. c4. It continues to play a variation as long as there are more key moves along that line.

If this isn’t working for you, please email your repertoire to ChessArsenal @ gmail.com and I’ll take a look. You can do this within the app, or if it’s too big it can now be done through iTunes File Sharing. Let me know if that’s the case and I’ll do a blog post on how to use it!

      Thanks,
      Brian

  4. Hey, Brian, is there any chance of allowing us to switch around openings, according to our own criteria of classification, rather than alphabetically by the first move? Later on, deeper into variations, this default classification makes little sense. Thanks!

    • Hey Bruce, yes! Choose “…” from the move list, then “Change Move Order,” then “Edit” and drag up or down.

Sorry there haven’t been updates. With family and work, and now getting back into chess tourneys, I’ve put zero time into programming.
